What it is

Generating power on your own roof

Solar panels turn daylight into electricity. What you don't use right away is fed back into the grid. An inverter makes the power suitable for your home. How many panels fit and what they generate depends on the size, orientation and shade of your roof; your installer determines that.

Every kilowatt-hour you generate and use yourself is one you don't have to buy. The monthly savings are in your quote and shown next to your new monthly payment.

Good to know

Before you start

Net metering (salderingsregeling) ends on 1 January 2027. After that, power you use yourself is worth the most.
Some energy suppliers charge feed-in costs. Check your own contract.
Have the condition of your roof checked: if it needs replacing within a few years, do that first.
If you live in a listed building or protected area, you may need a permit.

How to finance it with groenbudget

This measure improves your energy label. That's why your lender may lend more for it than for a regular renovation: you get extra borrowing capacity on top of your regular capacity.

There is no national subsidy for solar panels on homes, but you pay no VAT. That benefit is already in the price of your quote.

Questions about this measure

How many panels do I need?

That depends on your usage and what fits on your roof. Your installer calculates it and puts it in their quote; we calculate with that quote.

Is it still worth it now net metering ends?

Often yes, but the numbers change. Without net metering, power you use yourself is worth more than power you feed back. A home battery or smart usage (washing, charging during the day) helps.

What happens to my energy label?

Solar panels count for your label. After the work your new label is registered; that's included.
